Driving on today's busy roads can be highly stressful especially in unfamiliar places. Satellite Navigation provides an alternative to trying to drive and map read at the same time.

Satellite Navigation uses satellite technology to locate a vehicle's current position. It then calculates the best route to the desired destination and guides you every step of the way by spoken direction plus a graphic, onscreen display. This then leaves you free to concentrate on the road ahead.

Satellite Navigation customers automatically receive regular map updates free of charge giving access to the most up to date mapping information available. Also customers only pay for the mapping, travel or traffic information required, for the selected time period, thus eliminating the need to purchase new maps.

On your buttons for the battle of the jambusters

The latest generation of sat nav devices say they can also outfox traffic jams. We put four of them to the test. Emma Smith reports.

If you’re stuck in a traffic jam over the bank holiday there’s probably not much you can do except sit, curse and wait. Even if the radio warns of delays there’s no knowing whether a detour would save time.

But technology has a solution that could put an end to that sinking feeling as the traffic begins to slow and you realise you’re heading for a long crawl. The latest generation of satellite navigation systems can divert you round snarl-ups using traffic information beamed to your car.

Two British companies offer ingenious solutions to get you out of the jams. Trafficmaster, based in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, relies on data from a network of 7,500 roadside cameras and sensors. On motorways infrared sensors are fixed to bridges above the lanes. They monitor the speed of the traffic and send out alerts via radio whenever it drops below 30mph.

The effectiveness of traffic data at avoiding jams depends as much on the navigation system that interprets it as the information itself. So which ones work best? We put four of the market leaders to the test on a Friday afternoon dash from London to Boscombe pier, Dorset.

What they said about the satellite navigation system available from VUE Ltd:

Siemens VDO Dayton MS5400
£1,200
Five stars

Uses data from Trafficmaster. Information is displayed on a large A5-sized screen that is easy to read but could be difficult to fit in some cars. When the system spots traffic ahead the voice-over issues a warning, and an icon comes up on screen. A single click on the remote will provide information on a detour, including how much time you could save and extra mileage.

"The system took me on a circuitous route through London and seemed determined to keep me abreast of hold-ups that were nowhere near my route, including one particular jam at the top of the M25, when I was clearly heading away from it. I was diverted to avoid a sizeable tailback outside Bournemouth, cutting 15 minutes off my journey time. I was enjoying the sea air a few minutes before the second arrival and about 30 minutes before the last."
